This question is not as straight forward as one may think. The main difficulty is that strength can be measured in different ways so one muscle might be stronger in one aspect while another muscle might be suited for other functions and would be strongest since it is made for that purpose.
Given that variable I have decided to put forward several muscles that are considered the kings in their category within our human body.
Strength can be measured in terms of force generated. In this parameter the muscle will generate a force to move as much load/weight as possible. Usually this action is very powerful but also means short-lived. Due to the immense amount of energy generated the action of the movement can be maintained for a short period because the muscle will fatigue quickly due to the high energy consumption. In this category the first three muscles I am going to talk about are most commonly nominated
Soleus
Widely considered by many as the strongest muscle in the human body it is situated deep within the lower part of our leg muscle, behind the calf (gastrocnemius) muscles. It attaches from the top at the rear (posterior) aspect of the fibula as well as along the side of the tibia. As the muscle moves down to the ankle it attaches to the Achilles tendon which attaches to the rear part of the heel more technically called the gastrocnemius aponeurosis. The reason why it is considered the strongest muscle is because it is a major player in helping us to basically be able to move, walk, run, stand, dance and any movement requiring lower body activation. Its versatility in being able to continuously generate such massive forces to pull and push and ability of generating both dynamic and explosive strength make it a clear favourite for the title of strongest muscle in the body.
Gluteus maximus
The glutes are a force to reckon with. Although maybe not the strongest, together with the quadriceps muscles (thighs), they are the largest muscle of the human body and therefore are able to exert a tremendous amount of force. This muscle’s primary function is hip extension which we use when running, jumping, and walking up stairs and many other movements. Because they are large muscles they are targeted a lot in training, not only because they can withstand large loads but since they are large muscles they will consume a lot of energy and therefore burn a lot of calories when put to use.
I bet that a lot of you do not know what the masseter muscle is. Simply it is the main muscle that helps the jaw move, chew etc. Instead of its strength being measured by movement force, the masseter’s strength is measured by the pressure it generates. The human jaw has been measured to produce a biting force of 442kg – obtained during a research test in the College of Dentistry, University of Florida in 1986. Considering its size compared to other muscles in the body and the ability to exert such force it is no surprise that it is widely considered to be the strongest muscle in the human body.
Heart
The heart is the champion marathoner. The type of muscle that makes up the heart is very different from that of the rest of the body and is only found there. It is called cardiac muscle and the uniqueness of this type of tissue is that the action, or contractions, of the cardiac muscle are involuntary. Therefore the human body has created a machine, autonomous from our conscious mind and will keep on functioning independently of whatever happens as long as it receives its regular electric signals, and oxygen. The heart will pump blood throughout our body without any rest. If that is not a herculean task, you tell me!
Uterus
This muscle is a bit of an outsider but given the purpose of its function the uterus is considered one of the strongest muscles of the female body. Situated in the pelvic region it comes into play during childbirth and has the ability to stretch and contract with incredible force. Asking any woman who has gone through childbirth would probably agree with this line of thinking, but because of this specificity in its function and dependency on interaction of hormonal and biochemical factors that activate it the uterine muscle loses points in its race for the strongest muscle of the human body.
As you can see the human body is a magnificent piece of work that nonetheless needs care attention. It is our responsibility to take care of it so that out machine can give us many years of service and with it enjoy life to the fullest of our potential.
Till next time
